Dreaming of a Country Home

One of the problems (read: best part) with Pinterest/Tumblr is being able to look at really pretty homes. My home envy and inspiration from those sites is unreal. Right now I live in a little space, but I love to daydream about having a country home, or just living in the country (which I guess in Southern California would probably be Ojai, but I would totally love to live there).

At times when I need to feed my addiction I turn to This Ivy House. Seriously, this tumblr helps me get through the day, each and every day. From the exteriors to the interiors to the white sheets and the bright colored gardens, I'm pretty sure each of the places featured on this blog would make for a really awesome country home. Ahhhh, to dream.

Seeing Stripes

It’s true. I’ve never met a stripe I didn’t like. In fact, when I’m shopping I have to make a conscious effort to not go home with a whole stack of new stripe t-shirts. And now that spring is just around the corner, I feel like I need to spice my wardrobe up with a new set of stripes.

Santa Anas

Spring Wishlist

So far Los Angelels' winter has been pretty nonexistent, with only two days of rain really. And this weekend was no different with lots of sun, outdoor brunch and a long stroll at the farmer's market. Even though we haven't had much of a winter, I already feel ready for spring. All of these things above are on my wishlist. I 'm fairly certain that those Citizens of Humanity floral jeans would add a little extra pep in my step. Don't you think?

There's nothing more I love to do than get my wardrobe in style for the spring and summer. But until then, a girl can dream right?

The Perfect Book Club Party

A group of my girlfriends have a book club that meets like every month and half or so. Each of us takes a turn hosting book club night and I've already been thinking up what kind of a book party to throw for the occassion. But I keep coming back to this book club party I found over at The Glitter Guide. It's so cute and girly. Plus, blood orange bellinis, delicious looking desserts and conversations about books sound pretty divine to me, don't you think?

I’ve always been a huge fan of the way that Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen style themselves. But now that their younger, and may I say much happier looking, sister is on the scene, I’m obsessed with her fashion. I love that Elizabeth Olsen mixes high and low pieces and she pulls off eccentric items with a fishtail braid and a smile. Plus, that boxy, J. Crew esque-white purse and those funky sunglasses are to die for.

Reading About Paris

Without really noticing it, I ended up reading two books about Paris back-to-back. I started out with The Provence Cure for the Brokenhearted, which was both lighthearted and an intense emotional roller coaster at the same time. It's about a mom and son dealing with the death of their husband and dad and how they find life again. Then I picked up Sarah's Key and despite the intense storyline about children being sent away to concentration camps, it's a really wonderful story showing how generations and strangers can be brought together so easily.

Clearly, I love reading books about faraway and different places. It's cheaper than a vacation and you can be there from the comfort of your own bed, I mean, what's not to love?

Our Town

Last week I had the pleasure of going to a media screening of Our Town on the Broad Stage in Santa Monica. I wasn’t familiar with Thornton Wilder’s play and ended up not doing any research before going. Although, I did have some co-workers say that it was a snooze fest and was a play that couldn’t be “refreshed.” After sitting through all three acts of Our Town, I’m really glad I went and did no research before going.

There are a lot of life questions that sometimes we like to avoid, but that are always nice to be reminded of. Plus, Helen Hunt is in it and she’s pretty cool. And they have an intimate stage where the actors interact with the audience, so you feel like you are included in the magic.

So if you live in LA I highly recommend checking it out, since it’s here through mid January.

A Day in California

I know I am biased, but I just really love California. It has a little bit of everything -- deserts, beaches, mountains, lakes, sunshine, rain -- and most of it is all within a couple of hours of any place in California. Plus, for most of December and part of January it was in the 70s every day, and how can you argue with that? There is nothing I like more than getting on PCH and driving Highway 1 on slow mornings or for shopping excursions, all for the view.

When I found this video, I felt like it perfectly captures all of the things I love about this glorious state I live in and had to share.

Hello, friends!

It’s been awhile, I know. After having this blog for awhile, I felt burnt out. I felt like everything I liked, was everywhere else already. Plus, work began to consume my life. Like it was everywhere, all the time and by the time I got home I didn’t even want to turn on my computer. Things were pretty bleak.

Fast forward a few months and here we are in 2012. Suddenly, I feel ready more than ever to revamp the blog and share some of my musings. Of course, I want to do things a bit differently this time around. I live in LA and work in the entertainment industry, so I want to share more about the city I love and the things that shape my work. I try to travel semi-regularly (who doesn’t love to explore fun cities?), so I want to post about that too. I’m training for a half-marathon and am forcing myself to gain some culinary skills. Basically, I’m ready to embark on a new life chapter and a new perspective.

Lifestyle, with a particularly Southern California twist if you will.

Banana Bread

When it turns to Fall, there are few things I like more than enjoying a cup of tea with a slice of warm, fresh bread. And making it yourself means there's nothing more delicious. One of my absolute favorites (and easiest!) to make is banana bread.

Ingredients:

-2 eggs

-3 bananas

-1/2 stick a butter (softened, not melted)

-1 3/4 c. flour

-1tsp baking soda

-1/2 tsp salt

-1 c. sugar

-Preheat the over to 300 degrees

Mix all of this goodness in a blender until you get the batter for the dough. Butter and sugar your bread baking dish so you'll get a delish crust.

Cook for about one hour and fifteen minutes and let the bread cool. Viola!

Emmy Fashion Love

Jane Lynch was a superb Emmy host! It was the first award show that I thoroughly enjoyed the whole thing of in awhile. Kudos, Ms. Lynch!

And I thought the fashion was beyond marvelous. Sarah Hyland's dress was super gorgeous and she pulled it off relatively effortlessly. It's a close tie between her dress and Emily Blunt's sparkly gown for my absolute favorites of the night. But Jennifer Carpenter and Rashida Jones looked stunning also. It was just a great night for beautiful looks. Plus, honorable mentions for the men wearing bow ties (I love a good bow tie!).

Sometimes I get really caught up in myself -- like the needless, minute details of living that after a day of worrying seem silly. I know I'm not alone in this situation. But after this weekend and seeing all of the 9/11 coverage, I'm feeling really humbled about life. I want to start living my life without sweating the small things, dreaming the biggest dreams and going after them all, and never wonder what if. Of course, these concepts are all easier to think about than to put into motion, but I seriously want to try. Apple Pie

My grandmother makes the best apple pie around. And it is my life goal to one day make as killer of an apple pie as her. I set to work this weekend on trying to make it as good as her -- and I got pretty close -- minus a little cutting snafu that was a little ugly. However, a little bandage later and I was all set to dive back into my task.

To make the dough:

Pour a cup of flour and a stick of butter into a mixer until they mix together and start crumbling. Then pour almost frozen water until the mixture balls into one-dough form. Put the dough into the refrigerator over night or into the freeze if you are making the pie that day (you want it to become a little bit hard).

Meanwhile, peel the apples and slice them into pieces (watch out for those knives). Put the apples and a little bit of water into a pot. Cook them on low heat until the apples start to let go of some of their juices and become soft. Mix sugar into the warm apples and let them sit while you roll our the dough. Put the bottom of the crust into the dish, pour the apples into the pie dish and put the last dough mixture on top. Bake at 425 for 20-25 minutes and viola! Add a bit of sugar on top once it's baked for a little extra sweetness.

The High Line

On my last afternoon in New York we decided to check out the High Line, which turned out to be an excellent choice. It was a little bit muggy that day but the breeze from the Hudson River was a welcome comfort. We walked the entire thing, checked out all of the ways this park is sustainable, heard a beautiful choir, saw people roller skating and hanging out at the beer and food trucks, checked out some street art and picked something to add to my wall collection. Plus, from a tourist perspective, there were some of the most gorgeous views of the city from this park. Then we decided to walk through the city and recover from the heat in Union Square Park, which was also wonderful. It was a fabulous way to spend a Sunday afternoon.

Notes on New York

I got back from my quick trip to New York late, late Sunday and I have to say I'm completely in love with New York. The people we encountered with so nice including: the people at the Cooper Square hotel who were beyond pleasant at 5 AM, the train conductor who gave me his extra water when I felt sick from the train, the wonderful bartenders in Irish pubs, to the people in line at Shake Shack (totally worth the hour pus wait) and especially the New Yorker who was the only man on my plane to help me with my bag and not cut me in line. People say New Yorkers aren't very nice, but I found them to be some of the most pleasant people I've encountered in a big city ever.

I'm an LA girl through and through, but since my trip to New York I keep finding myself day dreaming about moving to the city that never sleeps.

Summer Pea Pasta

As one of my New Year's Resolution, I've really been working on expanding my culinary skills and not order take-out after a busy work day. What can I say, I love take-out! That being said, I've been learning how to cook various types of fish, beef and veggie dishes that I'd love to start sharing more of with you guys.

One pasta that I've been loving after busy work weeks is a lemon, pea pasta like this one here. All you need is pasta, two lemons, garlic and peas. While the pasta is boiling you make the base of the sauce. And once the pasta is done cooking, you simply pour it into the pan with the sauce and peas and let it continue to cook in the sauce to soak up all of the flavors. For added flavor, I usually add a dollop of light alfredo sauce to give it a thicker texture. And voile!

The Best of Carmageddon

As it turns out, Carmageddon was a whole lot of hoopla over nothing. It was actually quite crazy to drive on the bridge over the freeway and to see an empty freeway for miles -- and to be honest, it looked a lot like the end of the world or something.

But some genius people decided to seize the day for once in a lifetime photo ops like this one.

Wouldn't this be the most awesome dinner party to attend?

Reality Blog Love

Since I work in digital news, I'm constantly trolling the webospheres for new news. In my recent investigations I've found a new blog I love. Writing about celebrity and entertainment all day makes me shy away from it in my off hours, but honestly, one of my new favorite sites is Lauren Conrad's blog.

I love that her site is so easy to navigate, she gives practical beauty suggestions, nail polish inspiration, reads (awesome!) and offers average priced shopping options. If you haven't checked out her site, I highly recommend perusing through it for some personal enjoyment and creative inspiration.

Blueberry Cobbler

Last week we had a backyard Sunday night dinner. I had spent the day at the beach and sadly got a little bit burned. I really wanted a light dessert that wouldn't make me feel even hotter than I was with the sunburn.

I settled on this really easy and yummy blueberry cobbler. The prep time was minimal and you didn't need to make the dough the day before. You just mix the ingredients for dough in a bowl and put blueberries, lemon juice and sugar in the baking dish. Once the dough forms a thick consistency you put it on top of the blueberries and cook for 25 minutes.

Easy peasy and people think it's way harder than it really is.

Summer Pasta Dinner

One of my favorite but easiest dishes to make for dinner in the summer is caprese pasta.

All you have to do is mix tomatoes, mozzarella cheese, balsamic, olive oil and salt and pepper. Then you let the all of the good stuff soak together.

After your pasta is cooked, you just dump the caprese mix on to the hot pasta and voile!

The Help

I've been wanting to read The Help for what feels like forever. And when a friend at work told me she was reading it and that we should read it together, I jumped at the opportunity. I'm two days in and halfway through (thanks to a 1AM bedtime due to being enthralled in this book) and just can't stop thinking about. I think Kathryn Stockett writes in such a beautiful way. I hope to read more of her in the future!

Of course, now I'm itching to see the movie. Have any of you guys read the book or are seeing the movie?

Strawberry Jam

Over the weekend I checked one of the things off of my summer goal list, making jam!

It was a bit harder than I thought, but totally worth it since now I have yummy jam. I googled strawberry jam before hitting the farmer's market, so I settled on this recipe. I bought 6 pints of strawberries and jars from Sur La Table since they were having a sale. Luckily, I used the lemons off the tree in my yard.

I found that sterilizing the jars was the hardest work. Between boiling the jars and then taking them out of the pot when it's pipping hot!

The finished result has been incredibly rewarding. The jam is totally delicious and the best morning breakfast addition to have with espresso and/or tea.

Summer Goals

Honestly, I'm not sure where June has gone. Things at work have been crazy (because I've been helping with this video series in my spare time) and my sister graduated so we had a million family things to do. I feel tired but the thought of fun summer activities has me perking up.

Last summer I enjoyed making a list of things I was excited about for summer. So I thought I'd try it again so I have something to hold myself to accomplish my goals:

-Making strawberry jam

-Spending quality time reading
-Learn how to play tennis
-Go to the driving range
-Learn the basics about how to grill
-Go to New York and take in a show
-Perfect my Mojito and Sangria recipes
-Run a 5K or a 10K on the 4th of July

An Ode to Matchbook

Ever since Matchbook launched their most current issue and the NYT released their article on digital shelter magazines, I've had a few thoughts I want to share. There are a multitude of reasons I return to Matchbook as a reader and below are some of those reasons.

-I get inspired by other women to be a better and more thoughtful person; like even when I'm tired I should still pen that thank you note for someone giving me free baseball tickets

-I learn about young professionals who risk it all to have a business that is their own

-I'm reminded that beautiful homes don't need to come from a Pottery Barn catalog (although, it's OK if yours does) but can be a wonderful blend of vintage meets new

-There are a plethora of smart books and movies instead of features on the latest Blockbuster summer movie. Can I say how refreshing that is!

-Plus there are sections on historical figures and personal touches from readers and recently married couples which adds a really personal touch to a magazine with such a wide-reaching audience

So, if you haven't checked out the latest issue of Matchbook (and Rue and Lonny and High Gloss) I highly recommend it. In the days of digital media, blogs it's wonderful to be able to find things tailored to professionals who have a diversity of interests. From teaching Spanish to writing celebrity news to interior design. I believe that modern women have the ability to balance and foster lots of interests and pursue whatever goals they have.

And I'm pretty sure that's what makes me a Matchbook girl.

Healthy Potato Salad

Every once and a while I sign up for these healthy cooking classes that teach you how to make things in the most health-conscious way, but so the food still has flavor. In one of the classes we learned how to make healthy potato salad, which is basically potato salad without the mayo. Now I know that without the mayo it's not classic potato salad, but this healthy substitute would be a good option to throw into some summer BBQs to mix things up.

The first thing you do is cut red potatoes in half. Then you put them in a pot to boil them until they are just a teeny bit soft. Once they're soft, put them on the grill until they become tender. In the meantime, dice green onions and celery.

After you're potatoes are done you put them into a bowl with the green onions and celery. Mix in walnut oil, salt and pepper.

It turns out to be a light, healthy meal that still tastes completely delicious.

Memorial Day

Whew -- I'm so happy I survived the last couple of days. I live in a little studio and I had a major flood in the middle of last week. Two inches of water, ripped up carpet, chaos everywhere, new carpet, sorting through all of my belongings and I'm finally back to normal. And all the while my boyfriend, who lives in the Bay Area, was in town. Seriously he is saint for dealing with my hectic life whenever he is visiting.

Top 5 Romantic Comedies

Last of Ireland

And we have finally arrived at the last few spots on my road trip through Ireland. I'm already yearning to hit the road to go somewhere else, really anywhere else.

We hit the Western city of Kinsale, which on the gorgeous 80 degree day made the scenery stunning. We got lunch in this charming little hotel by the water and walked around the abandoned fortresses. From there we got on the road to check out my brother's place in Cork City. Cork City's college is so sophisticated and with the best greenery and stone buildings. It reminded me of Hogwarts a little bit which really tickled my fancy. We stopped into the English Market which is just open stalls of fresh produce, meat, veggies and other specialty products. After wandering around we picked some things out for dinner and dessert.

From there we went to Blarney, since it's only a few minutes from Cork. In all of the times we've been in Ireland we have never seen Blarney so my sister was really excited about it. We both kissed the Blarney stone and walked around. Personally, I thought the poisonous garden was just the coolest. Next to each plant there's a plaque explaining why each plant is poisonous and how it was used to hurt people. (Sidenote: So many plants were featured in Harry Potter -- totally crazy!)

On our last day we detoured to Inch Beach before we landed in our main destination of Dingle, which is famous for the dolphin Fungie. Fungie has a special bond with an American woman who used to live in Dingle and when she came back after a long departure from the small coastal town, she dived into the ocean and then Fungie appeared! So cool! We didn't have enough time to go on a boat ride to see Fungie, but we tried to spot the famous dolphin from the coast (we didn't). Instead we walked along the coast, took in the bright colored buildings, had the local pint of Murphys, and got some trinkets. Plus, we got to take in some trad music from an all-female group that I'm going to share tomorrow since it was especially awesome. On our way back to Limerick City we drove through Connors Pass, which is this teeny tiny road through the hills and often times you will think there's no way two cars can fit on these roads. We saw some great scenery with sheep farms for miles -- we even saw some sheep jump their fences and just cruise along the road.

Ireland's West Coast

Our Ireland road trip continued to Lahinch (a great surfer/beach community with these awesome bright colored buildings!). We stopped for lunch and took a few hours to lazy around this amazing beach community. From there we drove the short drive to the Cliffs of Mohr. It's been a few years since I had been to the Cliffs of Mohr, so I was shocked at all of the changes. They've added an eco-friendly visitor center complete with bathrooms, gift shops and places to grab a quick bite. But there were also fences and barriers added along the edge of the cliff. I suppose it makes the most sense to do that for security purposes since it gets a lot of jumpers/people blown off the cliff on windy days. And for the most part, you can still see the breathtaking views of the cliffs and coastline.

We stayed the night in Doolin, which I highly recommend if you are ever in County Clare. Doolin is this teeny tiny city that stretches like a mile long against the coast. There was this wonderful little hostel that kept a bog light all night long so it smelled wonderful against the nighttime fog. Also, Doolin is like the traditional music center of the west coast of Ireland. One of the three local pubs plays music every night which gives you a real sense of the Doolin community and Ireland in general.

At the crack of dawn the next day we got up early to go to the Aran Islands, but we only went to the closest one, Inishire. It was gorgeous and totally easy to walk the whole island. Cruising around this island, makes you feel like you are living in Ireland in the olden days. Bogs are light all day long, handmade fences made out of limestone rocks, ancient castles and fortresses, a cemetery with celtic headstones and farm animals everywhere. Plus, Irish (Gaelic) is the language the locals use.

Basically, in 24 hours we saw some of the most beautiful scenery in the world. Ireland is truly a little gem.

Limerick City

Our next stop was Limerick in Ireland. Limerick gets a bad reputation; however, I honestly love it. Maybe it's cause I'm from a huge city (Los Angeles), but I never feel unsafe in Limerick. My family visits Limerick because that's where my grandparents are from and where they lived for the first 20 years of their lives. We still have family and friends in Limerick City so we love to go back and get in touch with where our family started.

The beginning and end of our road trip in Ireland took place in Limerick. The first visit allowed us to see our family and friends and catch up over tea. We checked in our property, walked along the Shannon River, took in King James castle, hit Bunratty castle and on our last day there we got to go to a Munster game (rugby). It was incredibly fun and I feel like I picked up the basics of rugby in that one day. Its interesting going to a European sporting event compared to an American one because the crowd is so much more respectful of the players, game and refs. If you ever have a chance to see a European sporting event I highly recommend it.

But, I digress. We were in Limerick City for their annual Riverfest, which included BBQs and drinks and fireworks along the Shannon River. The next day there was a marathon/half-marathon/10 K also, but we missed that. It was a great celebration of my family's city with the most unbelievably gorgeous weather we could ever have asked for. I miss Limerick already!

London, Baby

The first stop on our trip to the UK was in London. We were there a week before the Royal Wedding, but the city was already so chaotic. Roads were closing, beautification was in full swing and tourists were aplenty. The hotspots were already crowded with people including: Big Ben, London Eye, Parliament, Buckingham Palace, Westminster Abbey and Tate Modern. It was kinda cool to see all of this English pride and the streets closed off in anticipation of the Royal Wedding. The weather in London was gorgeous, just like a summer day. So we had to rest on the lawn of Westminster Abbey before continuing our trek through London.

I had never been to Tate Modern but I think its such an interesting museum. First off, it's in an old power plant and totally looks like it from the outside. Its not trying to be too modern by being made entirely of glass, but rather embraces the roots of the building's history. Some of the exhibits were a bit too dark for me, but I adored seeing the Pollock's.

We also took a ferry ride on the Thames which allowed us to see the exquisite architecture of London. Seriously, not many other places have such beautiful buildings everywhere. Plus, my cousins were with us and are basically walking encyclopedias and knew everything about every building and the history of the city. Thanks to them I learned so much.

Our awesome tour guides, Damien and Nick, took us to Camden and Coven Garden neighborhoods. Since it was so nice outside, it was so relaxing to be outside to socialize with friends and family and to catch up on life.

For only two days in London, we covered a lot of ground and got to see many people. But I wouldn't mind going back to keep wandering around the city and hit Harrods one more time.
